Apprentice Dog Trainer
APPRENTICE DOG TRAINER WITH OBEDIENCE UNLEASHED DOG TRAINING INC.

Our Apprentice Dog Trainer program will give you the skills and experience to become a Professional Dog Trainer and join the elite team at Obedience Unleashed.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Apprentice Dog Trainer position is a 6 month program. Here are the details:
- Classroom theory which covers Obedience Unleashed training philosophy, clicker/marker training, canine behaviour and training methods (approximately 100 hours of classroom time with a final examination, 90% pass required)
- Dog trainer shadowing, LOTS of hands on experience and participation in consultations, group/private classes
- Puppy Obedience
- Basic Obedience Bootcamp
- Intermediate Obedience Bootcamp
- Advanced Obedience Bootcamp
- Off leash Obedience
- Agility
- FitPaws
- Tracking
- Nosework
- Protection training
- Behavioural consultations
- Socialization pack walks
- Behavioural modification, working with aggressive and reactive dogs plus other problem behaviours.
- Introduction to Service/Assistance Dog Training and placement
- Assisting in teaching and eventually leading group and private classes
- Kennel work, including dog walking, board and trains, doggy daycare and boarding
- Client management – initial consultations and customer service
- Dog training business management and daily operations
INVESTMENT
Cost of 6-month Apprentice Trainer program: $6750 (including tax)
Payment schedule: If payment cannot be made in full, the following payment schedule is acceptable.
- $1000 deposit for your spot to be held in the program, due 2 weeks before the commencement of the program.
- The remaining balance can be divided into 5 equal payments, due the first day of the month during the first 5 months of the program.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The Obedience Unleashed Apprentice Trainer shares work space and equipment with others at Obedience Unleashed facilities. There is daily interaction with other team members and physical contact with dogs that are in all different stages of training.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduation is required. Must be at least 21 years of age. Post secondary education or coursework is preferred. Also essential are familiarity and skills with canine behaviour, care and safety.
- Requirement to have own demo dog or be able to acquire a dog that can be trained for demo work.
- Articulate and receptive in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent interpersonal/social skills and organizational skills.
- Trustworthy, able to maintain appropriate confidentiality, be self-motivated and have sound judgment.
- Criminal record check required.
- The Apprentice Trainer program can be completed part-time in order to accommodate travel or other day-job responsibilities. Mandatory: availability to work evenings and weekends, particularly Saturdays (as this is the busiest training day for Obedience Unleashed). Ability to work flexible hours and split shifts.
- Solid record of working positively and productively with others and independently. Must provide 3 references.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. of food products for up to 200 feet and dogs weighing 70 lbs. for up to 10 feet.
- Basic skills in using PCs; the Internet; and MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to learn new software.
- Valid BC Driver’s License, at a minimum level of Class 5 and access to a reliable vehicle as the Apprentice Trainer will be required to drive between the Mission and Chilliwack Training facilities.
- Starting Salary: $15.00/hr (when assisting with training classes, board and trains).

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES UPON GRADUATION FROM THE APPRENTICE TRAINER PROGRAM WITH OBEDIENCE UNLEASHED DOG TRAINING INC.
Upon completion of the Apprentice Trainer Program there are several options:
- You can perform this job on a part time basis– working under/with one of our current trainers either at our Mission or Chilliwack Training centres. Salary expectations: $20-$40/hour for teaching group or private classes or working with board and trains at Obedience Unleashed facilities*
- Possibility of opening and managing an Obedience Unleashed Corporate Branch “location” – full time work. Yearly salary TBD based on experience.
*Note: We are actively hiring for a part-time Assistant Trainer at our Mission/Maple Ridge Training centre. Prerequisite: Completion of our Apprentice Trainer program.
Kennel Assistant
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Kennel Assistant cares for puppies and dogs that are boarding or training and the areas they use at Obedience Unleashed facilities. This role reports to the Office Manager or Trainer and supervises volunteers who support Obedience Unleashed kennel activities when applicable.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- The Kennel Assistant handles these responsibilities for Obedience Unleashed:
- Maintaining safe and sanitary conditions in kennels, clean and disinfect kennels, training spaces, and exercise yards.
- Ordering kennel equipment and supplies, including dog food orders, if applicable.
- Providing routine care and grooming of canines, including periodic checks for illness, injury or abnormalities, and nail trimmings, ear cleanings, administering medication and other basic treatments. Scheduling and transporting canines for veterinary appointments.
- Conducting basic assistance dog training to reinforce behaviours taught by Obedience Unleashed Instructors.
- Actively participating in the maintenance of up-to-date, accurate and complete records regarding care and training of dogs staying at Obedience Unleashed;
- Maintaining current knowledge of legal requirements regarding canines, as well as of assistance dog programs;
- In public encounters, familiarizing the public about Assistance Dogs and the legal rights of people with disabilities who are partnered with them; and demonstrating appropriate behaviour in working with dogs and volunteers (e.g., good personal and canine hygiene, courtesy and consideration to others and others’ property, proper training techniques in handling dogs); and
- Performing other related responsibilities.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The Obedience Unleashed Kennel Technician shares work space and equipment with others at Obedience Unleashed facilities. There is daily interaction, and physical contact, with dogs that are in advanced training and puppies residing in the kennel, as well as, exposure to chemicals and other cleaning solutions needed to maintain the kennel.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduation is required. Also essential are familiarity and skills with canine behaviour, care and safety.
- Ability to learn and practice assistance dog training techniques.
- Articulate and receptive in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
- Good organizational skills.
- Trustworthy, able to maintain appropriate confidentiality, and having sound judgment.
- Solid record of working positively and productively with others and independently.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. of food products for up to 200 feet and dogs weighing 70 lbs. for up to 10 feet.
- Basic skills in using PCs; the Internet; and MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to learn new software.
- Valid BC Driver’s License, at a minimum level of Class 5.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, and on weekends and weekday evenings, as operational needs of kennels require.
- Ability to operate Obedience Unleashed Vehicle to pick up / drop off dogs at client’s homes or walk dogs in Maple Ridge / Mission / Chilliwack area.
- Starting Salary: $13.00/hr (part-time)
